Why I Want to Revamp My Closet
Have you ever just looked in your closet and had the sudden urge to get rid of ALL of your stuff? That’s kinda where I’m at right now. I really don’t know what it is, but I haven’t been feeling connected to a lot of the pieces in my closet as of late. Don’t get me wrong – there are absolutely some things I plan on holding onto for years to come, but then there are others that make me let out the deepest sigh. Maybe it’s because I’m really coming into my grown womanhood, or maybe I’m being influenced by some of my favorite fashion girlies, or maybe I just feel like I need to always serve a look since I’m living in one of the fashion capitals of the world, but I’m ready to make some changes!
Growing up, my mom and I would shop A LOT. Like, go-to-the-mall-every-Saturday a lot. Of course as a teen, I was very much into the fast fashion of it all. I’m talking Wet Seal, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe…you name it! I was more concerned with trying to see how much I could buy versus investing in pieces that I was going to keep for a long time. Some of those habits spilled over into my adulthood, but there’s nothing more frustrating as someone who loves clothes than only being able to wear something a handful of times before it falls apart! I’ve been thinking a lot about the legacy of my closet (Is that a thing? Maybe I should coin this term.) and eventually, when the time comes, I would like to be able to pass some things down to my future daughter. So that means really taking the time to curate a wardrobe that is quality and timeless. I have to remember that just because something is on sale doesn’t mean that I have to get it, and that just because something has a higher price tag doesn’t mean that it’s worth it. I’ve been trying to do a better job at asking myself “What in my closet can I wear this with?” when I’m buying a new piece. The ultimate goal is to get the most out of the things I wear!
Over the next few months and the start of next year, I plan to really go through all of my current items and donate/get rid of what is no longer serving me. I started with my tops and T-shirts last month, and just recently went through my denim. I’ll continue to go through each clothing category and then build it all back up to only consist of the things that make me feel my best!
Now, this isn’t to say that I won’t ever step foot into an H&M or Zara ever again (because I know that’s not true!), but this is my pledge to myself to be mindful of the clothing I choose to buy.
I’m looking forward to sharing more about this journey with you all! Y’all will be the first to know when I find more pieces worth writing about.
